For Tyrone Strother, each artwork develops through patient construction—drawing, shaping, coloring, and refining individual details into a complete composition.
Silk Architecture
My silk paintings begin with hand-drawn designs on charmeuse, crepe de chine, or habotai. I apply gold ,silver or Black gutta resist to define the linework and guide the movement of dye across the fabric. Each section is painted by hand, building relationships between color, pattern, and imagery while allowing the silk’s natural luminosity to remain part of the work.
Intricate compositions can require hundreds of hours. Once the painting is complete, the silk is steam-set to fix the dyes, then washed and prepared for stretching and framing. The finished piece preserves the character of the textile within an original work of fine art.
Sculpture & Mixed Media
My sculptural process brings together digital design and hands-on construction. Depending on the piece, I work with digital modeling, clay, resin casting, and carefully applied surface finishes. Each material contributes its own texture, weight, and possibilities as the work moves from concept to physical form.
The Details Matter
A close view reveals what a full photograph may only suggest: intricate resist lines, shifts in color, sculpted textures, and individually finished surfaces. These details are central to my practice—and to the experience of encountering the finished artwork.
